ORAL HYGIENE

Oral hygiene is the practice to keep the mouth and teeth clean. De Necker Dentistry encourages patients to ensure they have good oral hygiene in order to prevent any dental problems such as bad breath, cavities and gingivitis.

The initial appointment at De Necker Dentistry will usually be with an oral hygienist.  A full oral and facial examination will be done and in some cases, a set of x-rays will be taken. Your dentist who will then examine the x-rays for any problems such as fillings that leak.

Oral hygiene is vital for healthy teeth and gums

The De Necker Dentistry oral hygienist focuses on the prevention of oral diseases.  This is done in the following manner:

  • A full mouth scale, polish and floss will take place. This procedure prevents plaque formation which in turn prevents cavities and gum infection.

  • Dental hygiene education will be given to the patient.

  • Correct brushing and flossing techniques will be discussed.

  • Fluoride treatment will be done in order to treat any tooth sensitivity and to strengthen tooth enamel.

We highly recommend that you visit a dental hygienist twice a year.

Children & Oral Hygiene

It is very important for children to visit the oral hygienist from a young age (4 years old) so that they can familiarise themselves with the environment and they may be taught correct brushing techniques.

Children’s first permanent molars develop at a young age (between 6 and 7). Children struggle to clean their molars so fissure sealants (a plastic coating) are placed on the back teeth to prevent food from getting stuck and causing tooth decay.

Guidelines for Good Oral Hygiene

De Necker Dentistry believes in good oral hygiene. Here is Estelle Murray from De Necker Dentistry in Century City  talking about guidelines relating to oral hygiene.

  • Brighten Your Smile

Your smile says more about you than any other physical feature. A beautiful, white smile is one of the fastest ways to leave a great impression. Professional whitening is the best option to safely lighten discoloured teeth.

De Necker Dentistry offers two teeth whitening treatments at any of our 3 practices. Patients have a choice of 2 teeth whitening methods namely Zoom Whitening and Opalesecence.

  • Zoom Whitening Treatment

The Zoom treatment is a simple procedure performed by dentists throughout the world. Results may vary depending on the tooth colour but this treatment will make your teeth 9 shades whiter (on average up to 9.3 shades) during the two hour appointment. These results may be higher for patients with darker teeth.

  • Opalescence

This teeth whitening treatment is easy to use and very effective.   It is a combination of an in-office and home treatment. A 30-minute appointment for the kick-start treatment is all you need and then you can do it yourself at home.  This way you have total control over the colour of your teeth. De Necker Dentistry provides detailed information on both these teeth whitening treatments.
